Amir Fadavi recently spoke with the Money Laundering Bulletin about how both UN and U.S. sanctions against Iran have evolved over four decades. In “Workaround–Iran: A Sanctions Review” (9 November 2023), Amir explains how compliance with U.S. sanctions can be complicated by changes in policy by the White House: “Even though the USA had the authority to go after people buying Iranian oil, they didn’t do so. That calculation may change if they regard Iran as threat, as if there’s more (oil) money for Iran, they could provide more financial aid to Hamas. Everyone knows Iran is supporting Hamas, but they don’t know if it’s financial or not. Now everyone is waiting as to whether there will be a more restrictive approach to Iran.”
