Juan Zarate recently spoke with The Washington Post about efforts to enforce trade sanctions and halt the flow of banned hardware and electronics pouring into Russia in support of its war effort in Ukraine. In “In Central Asia, a Hidden Pipeline Supplies Russia with Banned Tech” (18 July 2023), Juan compares the enforcement of sanctions to weeding an unruly garden: A “long, complicated effort, with emphasis on continuous enforcement, crackdowns on evasion, and demonstration that the Russian economy will continue to be isolated and risky for anyone electing to do business with Russia.”
